I’m With Coco

I know it’s not the best drawing I’ve ever done, but I was a little pressed for time. Tonight’s the last show of The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien, and I felt he deserved a little homage. Here’s the original. My buddy Aaron also did some fan art of Conan for the USA Today website. You should all check that out as well.
Okay, answers to the posters.
The easy two:
Hopefully everyone got The Clash and The Ramones posters.
The slightly harder two:
I can understand not getting the Devo poster, but I’m surprised no one got the Blondie one.
The hard one:
And no one got the Iggy Pop poster, but to be fair, it was pretty abstract (well, I guess they all kinda were).
So the winner with four correct guesses is Shaughn Struble (but to be fair he did have a copy of the script which dictated a number of bands to use)… Noam and Aaron I guess only got two each, and no one else guessed… So, I guess the fact that no one got all of them speaks to my inabilities as an artist… WE ALL FAIL! YAY!

Boldly Gone

I’m gonna try to make this a short update seeing as it’s 2 AM and I’m trying NOT to become a night owl.

Most of the people reading this (perhaps even all) have seen these pictures before, but here’s the story behind the pictures. It all started with a CD. Someone told me William Shatner’s album “Has Been” is really, surprisingly good. I reacted much in the same way everyone does when they hear that a cheesy 60’s cultural icon decides that they want to put out a CD. “REALLY?! LET ME LISTEN! GIMME, GIMME, GIMME!” So I pop it in, and instantly I’m in love. It’s full of honest reflection, catchy songs, and it’s slightly perverse; all things right up my musical alley. Track one, “Common People”, (a Spoon cover) is especially endearing and fantastic.

Now, as I do with all new music I enjoy, start telling people how good it is and how they should all listen to it. To my surprise, people’s reactions weren’t as enthusiastic as my own. Eventually I told Jamie, my boss at the time,  and, believe it or not, he started making fun of me. Every chance he got he’d make some joke about how lame I am for I listening to William Shatnert. So, in response, I decide to draw this:

The image was based on this image of the cap. I took a class last quarter that really pushed us to draw images in perfect proportion and photo realistically (which was a HUGE challenge for me as you can probably see). Since practice makes perfect, I thought I’d practice on this guy right here and half play a joke on Jamie at the same time.

I post the image up on Facebook, expecting a huge response. Instead I get a resounding, “Eh.”

NO ONE IS STOKED ON KIRK!

Everyone says, “Drawing is nice, but I’m a Picard person.” So, desperate for attention, I draw this:

And people are STOKED. Well… At least I got closer to the response I wanted out of it (nobody threw underwear at me or anything). Here’s the original image.

In the end, I’m not sure who the better captain is… I grew up watching Picard, so usually he’d be my go to guy. But in this case, I think we’re comparing apples and oranges. They both had their own styles, and both achieved in ways that the other couldn’t have. I mean, I don’t think Picard could’ve defeated the Gorn in hand to hand combat, but I don’t think Kirk could’ve defeated the Borg. Kirk could stand up to God, but I don’t think he had the wits to outsmart Q. Shatner released a fantastic album, Patrick Stewart did a great guest spot on Extras. Picard survived being tortured by the Cardassians and Kirk bagged a green chick… um… well… huh…

Okay, I guess Kirk does win.
